Transfer/connection

The Hakone Ropeway has four stations. You can transfer from the Hakone Mountain Climbing Cable Car at Sounzan Sta., the starting point on the east side. Togendai Sta., which is the origin on the west side, is a connecting point for the Hakone Pirate Ship, Odakyu Hakone Express Bus and Hakone Mountain Climb bus station.Owakudani Sta. is a transfer station which uses different platforms for transfers towards Sounzan and towards Togendai.

In the ropeway, there is no power in the gondolas, and the rope is turned with the motors (power equipment) at Owakudani Sta. and Ubako Sta. Ropes are gabbed with a device called a gondola grip device and move the gondolas.

The power equipment is the heart of the ropeway and the power equipment is located at Owakudani Sta. between Sounzan and Owakudani. Power equipment between Owakudani and Togendai are located at Ubako Sta., which is the origin station.

In addition, at the terminal station Sounzan Sta. and Togendai Sta., there is tension equipment that adjusts the rope tension. When commercial operation ends, the gondolas are divided into several units and housed in the stations. The rope (supporting strings) are joined together with the rope ends, with 1 piece having a diameter of 48mm.

The double-track automatic circulation type (DLM) Funitel started to operate in the Alps region of Austria and Switzerland in recent years, and this is the most suitable for mountain weather in Hakone. Since heavy machinery equipment in the station building is located in the bottom of the vehicle, they also have excellent earthquake resistance. In addition, since new gondolas have a gripping device which protrudes from the roof to the left and right like a deer's horns and supports the gondola with two supporting ropes, this was introduced in Funitel because it can provide high stability against wind and provides a comfortable ride. Dual single-line autoamtic circulation type (DLM) Funitel operation started between Sounzan Sta. and Owakudani Sta. in June 2002 and between Owakudani Sta. and Togendai Sta. in June 2007.

What is Funitel?

A grappling device (shaped like a deer horn) attached to the gondola’s roof grips the rope and moves it to two parallel supporting ropes. The wide gauge which has a width wider than the width of the carriage (gondola) is called Funitel. Due to its structure, the Funitel can shorten the suspension machine and reduce the total height to a considerably lower level, and the distance between the two support lines is larger than the distance from the support cord to the wind pressure action point. Therefore, a lot of safety against wind pressure can be obtained.
The origin of this word is said to be from the French words of funiculaire (steel railway) and teleferique (imaginary cableway).

The Hakone Ropeway gondola has a wider width and no steps so that people can get on and off with a wheelchair as is. In addition, the gondola is stopped so that anyone can get on and off safely and smoothly so you can use it with confidence.

  • Passenger entrance where steps have been eliminated

    It is possible to get on and off smoothly with the elimination of the steps between the ground and the gondola.

  • Wheelchairs can be used as is

    Since the gondola stops once before the door opens, you can get on and off safely, and there is margin in the width even if you are using a wheelchair.

  • Elevator

    For people who have trouble with stairs or those who use wheelchairs, please use the elevators.

  • Baby room(nursing room)

    Customers with babies can use a rest room with equipment such as diaper changing beds.

  • Multipurpose toilet

    There is a multipurpose toilet with various equipment installed, and anyone can use it.

  • Window dealing with wheelchairs

    We have provided windows for customers who want to ride with wheelchairs.

  • Wheelchair lending

    There is a free wheelchair lending service at each station. The wheelchair size is 63cm wide x 100cm long x 90cm high.

  • Service assistant

    We will provide a service assistant at each station. Please feel free to contact us if you have any trouble.

  • AED

    An AED machine in installed for each station in preparation for emergency situations.

  • Pet cage lending

    Pet cages are available to borrow for people with pets. The cage size is 31.5cm wide x 55cm deep x 36.5cm high.
